The Victorian Government has announced an important update for those in the home building industry, particularly those involved in Dependent Persons Units (DPUs) and Small Secondary Dwellings (SSDs).
With housing shortages continuing to be a challenge, the Planning Minister has approved the extension of temporary planning provisions for DPUs by another year, ensuring continued access to this essential housing option.
What Are Dependent Persons Units (DPUs)?
A Dependent Persons Unit (commonly referred to as a granny flat) is a self-contained home located on the same property as an existing dwelling. Traditionally, these homes provide affordable and flexible living solutions for aging parents, adult children, or family members requiring additional care and support.
The government’s latest amendment, VC266, introduces two major changes:
✅ Extension of Temporary Provisions – The deadline for DPU transitional planning provisions has been extended until March 28, 2026, allowing more time for homeowners and builders to take advantage of this housing option.
✅ Updated Permit Requirements – New guidelines clarify how DPU applications are assessed under various planning overlays (such as flood, erosion, and bushfire management areas), ensuring properties meet updated safety and environmental considerations.
These changes follow a series of government reforms aimed at introducing Small Secondary Dwellings (SSDs), a broader category of self-contained homes that will eventually replace DPUs in the long term.
